We had heard about a golf course situated on the edge of cliffs with 12 holes and in progress of building the remaining 6, called Brautarholt Golf Club about 30 minutes from Reykjavik, but had not planned to play it. But after several days of long long drives we decided another long road trip was not as appealing as golfing another course, so we were able to get a 1:40pm Tee-Time, and after spending a bit more time wandering around downtown Reykjavik we headed for a 2nd Iceland golf round and so glad we did!
As you drive to the course you wonder, where are we going?! It looks like you are going to drive off the edge of the cliff and then up pops a small Pro Shop!
It is a very creatively designed and challenging course, on the edge of cliffs by the sea with breathtaking views of mountains and the Reykjavik city skyline, including Volcanos and the main Church! We were paired up with two locals and we used their nicknames "Ant" and "Geir". Both super fit athletes in Football (Soccer as we say in the US) and Basketball and working on their golf game!
The course is a "good" walk with several very long distances between holes, but doable. The views are spectacular on just about every hole. There are jagged stones everywhere, along with lava stones, black sand and then between all of it are Tees, Fairways and Greens, kept in great shape, with wild long grassy plants. Nothing much else is covered in green except for some moss and on occasion purple or yellow wild flowers appear.
The first hole is a Par 5. You Tee-off into a valley and then the Green is located very high above you on the edge of a cliff and your approach shot to the green is blind! What a way to start. Check out the course details here.
Crawling around the fairways are robo-mowers. They look like "Roombas" roaming all around. Ingenious and also a bit unsettling!
Accuracy is a must and you may want to consider going down a few clubs, sticking with irons and hitting them shorter but straight! Unless you have super great control of your Driver and woods. We did lose several balls, found a few and by the end of 12 had 3 to spare! That's a victory!!
Such a wonderful atmosphere, wished the last 6 holes were open while we were there.
If you get to Iceland, this is really a wicked-cool course to hit!
