We have lived on Long Island, NY for over 35 years and very rarely ventured to "the end" to enjoy the spectacular Montauk living! For the last few years, we now take a long 4-day weekend in September, after the summer crowds and head east. And while we did play Montauk Downs a few years ago, we never documented it, so now we are!
We were fortunate to have spectacular weather to enjoy our round at Montauk Downs! The course was in excellent shape and for $53.00 for Liz and a senior discount for Jeff at $39, the price is fantastic for NY State Residents.
There is a great Pro Shop and Cafe/Market/Bar. And Joan at the Starter station was very nice and kept a tight ship, sending out the Tee-Times right on time!
It's a "good walk" with many ups and downs. The course was very well manicured and the greens were in excellent shape and were fairly flat, not too much undulation. There were a few good carries, and some strategic decisions can lead to less strokes! There are some ponds to stay out of and fescue lined many of the holes. Many trees line the course, but there is limited shade. There are a good share of sand trips, and some of them are pretty deep with high walls! Most of the fairways were fairly wide, if you hit them! ;). Hole 12, Par 3 is a tough and "fun" one.
We were paired up with fellow New Yorkers Jonathan and Ari. Very nice, fun and supportive guys out for a great round. On the 2nd hole Ari went barefoot and shared that he feels more connection to the ground, especially when putting. Liz, as a Health Coach, knows that "earthing or grounding" is very healthy, so hopefully Ari felt filled with lots of great natural nutrients! We're not sure it's a trend that will take off - but, hey you never know!
Thanks for a very enjoyable round - Jonathan and Ari!
And if you get to Long Island, NY and can get out to "the end", it really is worth the trip. Not just to golf Montauk Downs, but to chill, relax and enjoy the beach and bay atmospheres, several parks, hikes, fishing, surfing, sailing, rooftop restaurants and bars!
