Golf the World, Country #14, Iceland! July 2025, Golfklubbur Mosfellsbaejar Golf Course (about 20 minutes northeast of Reykjavik).

We spent 5 full days in Iceland, basing ourselves in the city of Reykjavik. We rented an excellent Apartment on AirBnB and then road tripped our way around the country. And while we did not drive around Ring Road (that is about an 8 day trip), we did see plenty on the Golden Circle filled with Volcanos and Waterfalls! We started off our trip with a Walking Food Tour of Reykjavik hosted by Wake Up Reykajvik and highly recommend it to learn about the culture, history and enjoy tastings of various foods and restaurants. Our host was Stevie and he was fun, funny, informative and welcoming. Another great resource we used to prepare for our trip was Iceland With A View.

For us, golfing was a priority! So in between hiking Volcanos, seeing waterfalls and geysers, drinking fresh water and eating ice cream, we golfed twice! First round was Golfklubbur Mosfellsbaejar about 20 minutes northeast of the city. The course had spectacular views of mountains, volcanos, water and was very popular - and since in July you can golf until midnight (actually all overnight) the players just kept coming and coming.

Since we were only playing a few times, we rented clubs. They did not come with balls, tees or a towel - so brings your own, unless you want to buy some. They did have a "cheap" option of selling used golf balls they found on the course - that's creative cash flow for sure!

The Pro Shop is small, and attached to a nice bar/restaurant. Delicious food and very popular. Worth enjoying before or after your round.

We were paired with a young (about 12 years old) and very good golfer, Halfbor (pronounced Hafthour) and his dad Kristjaft. Halfbor was helping his dad learn golf! :) Very nice locals of Iceland and coincidently our Walking Food Tour Guide is cousins with Kristjaft's wife! We were told that it's a tight knitted community and many people are related - and there you go!

You actually start on the 10th hole as a norm! There was no starter and limited guidance, so we were really appreciative to be with Halfbor and Kristjaft. Halfbor was essentially our "forecaddy" helping us keep tabs on the balls, point in the direction we should hit and where the next hole was. The signs are pretty limited, so be sure to be paired up with locals who have played the course if you can! Not to mention it's joyful to have conversations and learn about their culture and country.

The course has a lot of twists and turns, many views of water, lots of stone and very little trees. The Front 9 and Back 9 are vastly different. The Back 9 is much flatter with narrow fairways, high grass edging, so you are either on the fairway or your ball is probably gone - not to mention "attack" birds if you go near their nesting area! Thank goodness our local partners shared that if you just walk around with your golf club raised above your head, the birds will attack that and not you - so you can spend a little time looking for you ball if you'd like! There is much natural land and it feels like the course was built around it.

The Front 9, that you play 2nd, has tons of elevated greens, wide open fairways and is very very hilly with blind shots, long carries, hidden ravines, creeks and streams. And look out for Hole 5, Par 5 - that's loooong and a doooozy - lots of "fun"!

Some of the great features of this course include:

  • Broken Tee Box Holders on each Tee

  • Flagpole, cup" that lifts the ball up when you pull out the flag

  • Great distances stakes for 200, 150 and 100 (in meters!)

  • Bags of seed/sand for divot filling

  • Air-compression to clean your cleats

We definitely recommend a round at this course if you are planning to golf in Iceland! And pack layers, a warm hat and rain gear. We started with some light rain, then it got heavier and by hole 13 it felt more like summer!

Thank you again to our wonderful golfing partners Kristjaft and Halfbor - and be on the lookout for a Golf Pro from Iceland named Halfbor in about 10-15 years!!
